Water based wood finishes are often more suitable than oils on highly absorbent timbers such as pine, plywood and cork. They also avoid any yellowing that can occur with oils on these light coloured timbers. The finishes below can be used on timber trim, panelling and furniture and some on floors and concrete or other absorbent surfaces. See the Technical Data Sheets on each product for more information on this.
Water based wood finishes range from coloured washes and stains such as MUROBOND Woodwash and VOLVOX ProAqua Wood Finish in colours, through to clear coatings such as VOLVOX ProAqua Wood Finish in clear, MUROBOND Murothane and VOLVOX Floor Sealer.
Water based coloured washes and stain finishes add a little more colour with each coat and can produce vibrant colours, compared to oil stains which transfer most of their colour in the first coat and produce more muted colours. However, water-based stains can show overlap marks, so need to be applied very evenly.
A light sand after the first coat of any water based finish is usually recommended to smooth any raised grain. This results in a smooth final finish. All timber is unique however and the effect of a finish will depending on the porosity, density, degree of sanding, and initial colour of the timber. Sample pots are available to test on your surface first.
